LELDF provides assistance to law enforcement officers who are required to defend their official actions before courts and governmental administrative bodies. LELDF provides assistance without regard to race, color, creed, religion or ethnic background. The only conditions for assistance are that the officer must have been enforcing the law in the line of duty and performing those duties according to recognized law enforcement rules and regulations in force at the time of a complaint.

Any law enforcement officer who has been charged with a crime or against whom a civil or administrative complaint has been filed may apply for assistance from the LELDF. |

Upon receipt of a request for assistance, a member of the Board of Directors, or his or her nominee, will determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegations. Such a determination must include an interview of the law enforcement officer and, if possible, an interview of potential witnesses and available information, including information from counsel for the complainant. |

A report will be prepared setting forth the facts, any applicable law and an analysis of the appropriateness of the applicant's acts and alleged improper acts in light of all the circumstances and the relevant rules, laws and regulations of the jurisdiction. |

A unanimous vote of all members of the Board of Directors will be necessary to authorize LELDF to provide assistance. If the Board votes to provide assistance, it may be in the form of subsidies for living expenses or subsidies for legal expenses. |
