CASE UPDATES

Larry Nevers of Detroit, featured in our last newsletter, has appealed to the Michigan Supreme Court. Nevers, who now has lung cancer, was convicted in a controversial case when Malice Green, under the influence of drugs and in possession of cocaine, resisted arrest and had to be subdued by four officers. Nevers struck Gree with a flashlight in the melee. Green died of substance abuse, but Nevers was charged and convicted of second degree murder.

Nevers remains in close confinement (in order to protect him) in the Oaks Correctional Facility in Michigan. The Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund is assisting in the preparation for the parole hearing to be held in the next few weeks. You can send a note of encouragement through this website.

Officer Scott Smith of New Milford, Connecticut, is out on bond pending an appeal to his manslaughter conviction. Smith was charged with murder of a dangerous felon during an attempt to arrest him. Scottās attorney is optimistic that, due to the number of errors committed during the original trial, the conviction will be reversed and a new trial granted. We hope that the Court of Appeals will grant a new trial this year.
